The Importance of Health Promotion

Today our class was informed on the importance of health promotion and public health.  The definition of health promotion is "the use of discipline-specific techniques to assist people in achieving their health related goals.   The phrase "health related goals" is a very broad term that will differ on a case-by-case basis depending on the client's physical, emotional, social, or any other context that the client engages in.  As a future healthcare professional, I find it very important to not just treat, but inform others on how to care for themselves in any situation a client may face.  I also learned that there are 3 levels of interventions that aim to reduce health threats.  A primary intervention includes the prevention of diseases or injuries before they occur.  A secondary intervention is used to reduce the impact of a disease or injury that has already occurred.  And a tertiary intervention is used to limit the impact of an ongoing illness or injury that has lasting effects.  Therefore, promoting health can be used at any stage of a diagnosis or injury, and it is never to late to acquire information in order to live an accomplished and fulfilling life.
